This is the rare bachata night that works for someone who has never danced and has no intention of starting. It is a rooftop bar with one of the best views in Manhattan — they can have a drink, watch the skyline, and decide for themselves whether to join in.
Which makes it the easy invitation. A first date, a friend visiting the city, colleagues after work, the partner who says they have two left feet. Nobody has to commit to a dance class to come along.

One of them is on the roof every Wednesday, and the same pair alternates Fridays too. It is always one of these two, so the sound carries across both nights rather than changing with whoever is booked.

On Fifth Avenue midway between 26th and 27th, in NoMad. 230 Fifth bills itself as New York's largest indoor and outdoor bar, and the roof looks straight at the Empire State Building.
No dress code, no reservation
There is no dress code on Wednesdays. 230 Fifth encourage walk-ins and take no reservations — in their own words, come as you are. Nothing to book beyond your entry to the party, and no list to get on.
Dress for a rooftop rather than a dance studio, and bring a layer even in summer. Smooth-soled shoes help if you plan to dance.
Weather is not a problem
The roof is heated through the winter months, so this runs year round rather than seasonally — a Wednesday in January works the same as one in July.
Getting there
The R W at 28th Street is a block away; the 6 at 28th and the F M at 23rd are both a short walk.
It is about fifteen minutes on foot from our Pearl Studios classes, if you are coming straight from one.

Do I need to bring a partner?
No. Partners rotate through the class, and on the floor people ask each other to dance. Coming alone is completely normal.
I do not dance at all. Is there any point in me coming?
Yes — and this is the night for it. It is a rooftop bar first. Plenty of people come for the view and the company, watch for a while, and try the class the following week. Nobody will make you dance.
What should I wear?
There is no dress code on a Wednesday — come as you are. Dress for a rooftop bar rather than a dance studio, and bring a layer even in summer, since it is open air. Smooth-soled shoes make dancing easier, but this is not a studio floor.
What happens if it rains?
The roof is heated and partly covered, and the night runs year round. If severe weather ever forces a change we will post it on Instagram, so check there before setting out on a bad night.
How is this different from your Friday night?
Friday is in a dance studio and runs till half past two — it is the serious social, for people who came to dance. Wednesday is a rooftop bar that happens to have bachata, finishing at one. Same music, different evening.
