Two residents, alternating weeks — one of them is on every Friday, and the same pair covers Wednesdays. It is always one of these two, which is why the room has a sound of its own rather than whatever a guest happens to bring.

Between 7th and 8th Avenue. Take the lift to the fifteenth floor — there is no street-level signage, so look for the building number rather than a sign.

The Friday class is an hour. If you want to actually get good, we run graded classes four nights a week at Pearl Studios — $40 for a single class or from $119 a month.
Getting there
Three minutes' walk from Penn Station, so the 1 2 3, A C E and N Q R W all land within a few blocks.
The 9pm class and the social are in the same room here, so once you are up on the fifteenth floor you do not move again. The earlier 7pm Level 3 class is at Pearl Studios, a few blocks away.

Questions people actually ask
Do I need to bring a partner?
No. We rotate partners throughout the class, and on the social floor people ask each other to dance. Coming alone is completely normal — a good half of the room does.
I have never danced at all. Is the 9pm class really for me?
Yes. It starts from the basic step and assumes nothing. Beginner and intermediate run alongside each other, so you will not be the only person learning it for the first time.
What should I wear?
Something you can move in. Shoes with a smooth sole make a real difference — sneakers grip the floor and make turning harder on your knees.
What is sensual bachata, exactly?
Bachata is a Dominican partner dance. The sensual style emphasises body movement, isolations and close connection between partners, where the traditional and Dominican styles lean more on footwork and rhythm. Fridays are sensual bachata, with some salsa played through the night.
Can I come late, or leave early?
Both. The class runs nine to ten and the floor stays open until half past two. Plenty of people come for the class and leave at midnight, and plenty arrive at eleven.
Is there anywhere to leave a bag?
There are racks in the studio, though there is no staffed bag check — most people just keep their bag with them at their seat. Bring what you are comfortable keeping an eye on.
